Now that the dust has settled on the 2007 Roswell UFO Convention, it is time to draw attention to events that happened at the nearby International UFO Museum & Research Center, a.k.a. the Roswell Museum. Established in 1992 by Roswell incident participants Walter Haut and Glenn Dennis, the museum is dedicated to educating the general public on all aspects of the UFO subject. Its exhibits cover not only the events surrounding the famous 1947 crash, but also related topics, ranging from ancient astronauts to alien abductions.
Since the inauguration of the annual Roswell UFO Festival in 1996, the museum’s popularity has grown dramatically, and current plans are under way to move to a larger facility. Another sign of the museum’s expanding stature is the recent establishment of a Board of Research Directors, consisting of Tom Carey, Stanton Friedman, Dr. Bruce Maccabee, Ron Regehr, Don Schmitt, Derrel Sims and Freddie Silva. This distinguished group of investigators, with their diverse range of expertise, represents the potential for a new level of cooperation among researchers, and is a promising model for the UFO community.
The group members were on hand during the July 2007 Roswell festival, where much of the action was taking place at the museum itself. One visitor who claimed to have experienced alien contact was referred to alien abduction expert Derrel Sims, whose groundbreaking work is chronicled in an exhibit at the Roswell Museum. The visitor claimed to have an anomalous object in his hand which he thought might be an alien implant. Assisted by colleagues Ron Regehr and Dr. Bruce Maccabee, Sims demonstrated some of the basic forensic techniques he uses when presented with a fresh case. These procedures were documented on video by MUFON Nevada State Director Mark Easter, who later stated, “I knew I was about to witness something unusual.”
Easter filmed the 27 minute examination, which included placement of dental bite wings, labeled by Dr. Maccabee, on the man’s body. Sims’ speculates that some degree of radiation might occur during alien contact, and hoped the small x-rays provide trace evidence during future contact. Sims also used a black light to check for fluorescent traces which would point to a very recent experience.
The man’s hand was then visually examined to determine that there were no visible scars that would indicate injury or prior conventional surgery. Sims explained to the on-lookers that imbedded or implanted objects, naturally occurring or alien-related, sometimes demonstrate a degree of magnetism. According to Easter, “Mr. Sims proceeded to put a small magnet in my hand and pointed to this gentleman’s left hand ring finger and said, ‘Rub that magnet over this finger.’” To the astonishment of everyone present, the skin of the man’s hand did indeed respond. “I’m not sure what it was, but there was something attracted to the magnet,” explains Easter. “You could see the skin attached to the magnet and pulling away from the bone.”
Sims is pursuing this provocative case, employing his systematic, multi-modality approach. “We don’t know what is in this man’s hand yet that caused such a response,” states Sims. “Whatever the evidence reveals, that’s what we’ll report.” As a validating source, Sims plans to work with MUFON, much as he did in a previous April 2001 case.* “This new alleged implant case is an opportunity to bring out the best in ufology,” states Sims. “Working with team members Maccabee and Regher, and involving MUFON, gives the case the necessary transparency, peer review and documentation. By maintaining the highest level of investigative protocols, we hope to eventually present unimpeachable scientific evidence of the alien phenomenon.”
Sims’ new book, Alien Hunter: Evidence in Light, chronicles his 37 years of UFO investigations, including his discovery of the implant phenomenon in 1960. To order a copy of the book, email Sims at derrelwsims@yahoo.com.
* In April, 2001, then MUFON-Los Angeles Director Don Waldrop secured the medical personnel that performed the surgical excision of an anomalous object from the leg of a nalleged alien experiencer. The procedure was filmed by an award-winning director, who featured Sims in a documentary about alien abduction. Pathology reports revealed nothing extraordinary, and the embedded object appeared to be metal shavings of prosaic origin.
